GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #138

I don't know why I thought of this two-word phrase, but it's kind of saying, "Wherever you go, bring love with you." Spread love. Give love. Share love. You get the idea.

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #137

I do like my movies. I saw the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey when I was a kid. I didn't really understand much of it, but I thought it was pretty cool, which is surprising because I generally don't get into much science fiction (or didn't at that age). I later learned a bit more about HAL, the computer that developed a mind of its own. All of that aside, when the first large color apple computers came out, I was a secretary in the Dean's Office in the College of Education at the U of I, working for two very interesting, friendly, and funny associate deans. I became a self-taught Mac "expert" at the college and was called upon by many people to problem-shoot their computer issues as well as help them put fun things on their computers. One such popular thing at the time was kind of like ringtones are now on our cell phones—using various customized alerts to entertain us. On the Macs, it was setting sounds for various computer functions. As a joke, I put the phrase on today's piece on Ted's (one of the associate deans) computer so that anytime he did something that would cause the computer to "beep" at him, instead it would say, "I'm sorry Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that." We got the biggest kick out of that, and I will never forget it! Ted wasn't sure what to think of me sometimes, but I know he liked me, and he would laugh every time he heard his computer talk to him in this way; I could hear him from where my desk was. So that is the long story to explain the impetus for choosing this particular phrase today!

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #136

Some quotes from TV or movies can only truly be appreciated if you actually saw the movie/TV episode and can hear it in your head as you read it. That is definitely the case with this one! If you never saw the Seinfeld episode where Elaine says this (in a silly sounding Australian accent) to a stranger at a party, it just seems dark and sick! So, please don't be offended... it's just a silly line from a sitcom.

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #132

I'm always on the lookout for funny sayings, proverbs, puns, slogans, and so on. I came across this British saying, which basically describes someone who says a lot of things that they plan to do or promise but just don't ever follow through. I've heard it's used to describe certain politicians. Ha! I won't get into political talk here... Anyway, you get the drift. I wanted to somehow show someone caught with their pants down, but I couldn't think of a way to do it tastefully. Instead, the mouth gets the point across, I think.

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #131

I love very ornate, detailed work. This took quite a long time to create, but I enjoyed every second of it! Hope you likey. :)

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #130

I believe you can make the choice to be happy. Sometimes it means to just simply act as if you are happy. What I really mean is that you can choose to focus on the good and find joy in it, to practice positive mind habits such as responding to situations mindfully and in ways that bring you the most inner peace. The first step is to actually live mindfully. Most people don't even know they aren't aware or awake. You can only be happy if you choose to be so. That doesn't mean you won't feel sad or angry or hurt, but you can choose how you respond to and embrace those feelings.

Well, put it this way. If you choose not to be happy, you will be unhappy. :) So why not choose to be happy? And then do your best to do the things that will bring true happiness, true inner peace and joy.

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #129

This photograph really inspired me. I found it on morguefile.com, which I've mentioned in other posts as being such a great resource for designers! Anyway, it's the inside of some kind of pipe or barrel... I guess. The photographer (who has the alias "morethanordinary") captured the amazing colors that have formed due to whatever kinds of chemical changes occur over time on metal. The whole thing just made me happy to be able to find beauty in the ordinary or even things one might consider distasteful at first glance. Amazing.

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #128

I love the idea of being in forests. I love how forests look, smell, feel, sound...all except the biting bugs (mosquitoes mainly, and they love my blood). Anyway, photographs of forests are so appealing to me. Also, being in nature alone, or with another person, is my idea of a kind of paradise. Being close to nature, away from technology and obligations... That's what today's piece is about.

The weather is changing into the beautiful fall weather that I love, and I am going to go for some walks in the woods this fall. I have a friend who does this often, and I've been with her once. It was wonderful except for the mosquito swarms! That's why fall will be a much better time. I'm looking so forward to it!

I'm pretty happy with the lettering in this piece, and I think it goes well with the image. Hope you enjoy!

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #127

So many great Seinfeld quotes! I love the episode where Elaine is dating Tony, a "mimbo" (male bimbo), and George develops a man-crush on him. Tony's catch phrase is "step off," and it's used many times during the episode. It means, "stop," "let it go," "go away," or other similar things. Funny stuff!

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #126

This is an example of looking for and finding a quote from Charles Schultz's Peanuts comic strips. I love the word "crabby," and Lucy was often crabby. So I looked it up (isn't the Internet great for some things?), and found the perfect one. Then, I searched on morguefile.com for crabs, and found this cute little guy. And, I wanted to create type for the word "CRABBY" that looked crabby, so to speak. Did I succeed? Let me know what you think!

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #125

I found this photo on morguefile.com and thought it was so cute that I had to think of a phrase to go with it!

I've never been much for puns, but somehow, once in awhile, they work (to me). Kind of cheezy, yes, but I still like it. :)

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #124

Caring about how others feel is a beautiful quality in a person. Showing that one cares is even more beautiful. One thing to keep in mind is that you remember when someone makes you feel special. It's a great gift to give to another being. There are so many ways you can make another person feel special! This is especially important when you consider the people who feel much less than special. People who are ill, elderly, or feel as if they don't fit in. Tell the bank teller how pretty she looks today. Give a big hug to a friend, and say, "I love you." Compliment people in genuine ways. Let people know how much they mean to you. It's one way to spread joy, and we all need joy to be spread as far and wide as possible!

Thank you for reading! Thank you for your support! It means a lot!

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #123

I am so happy that I'm finally back on a clean eating, daily exercise program! I go through months, even years, of having these healthy habits and being committed to them, but then something happens and I fall off the wagon, so to speak. This time it was going back to school full time two years ago. The intensity, the lack of time for anything else but school, and stress led to very little exercise, snacking to stay awake late at night while working on projects, and turning to comfort food for stress. I put on the good old, "freshman 15!" I am finally determined to get fit, healthy, and able to wear clothes I could wear at my ideal weight a couple of years ago. I am already seeing great results. :)

I'm loving my BeachBody workouts, such as PIYO, 21 DAY FIX, TURBOFIRE (Chalene Johnson is the instructor for both TURBOFIRE and PIYO...LOVE her), and the latest and super fun CIZE! Shaun T, the teacher, is so much fun. Really motivating! All just basically dance moves but at a frenetic pace! This simple lettering piece is the tag line for CIZE.

By the way, I am a BeachBody coach. This is a recent development, and I have yet to go through any of the coach training, but if you want to reach out to me about that or any of the BeachBody exercise programs, Shakeology, or the 21 DAY FIX meal plan, I'm your girl!

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #122

As I have said before, Fiona Apple is probably my favorite singer/songwriter/musician. The song, "Sullen Girl," from which these lyrics came is one of the first favorites of mine. It's from her very first record, Tidal. The song is so beautifully sad and haunting.

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #121

Oh, The Wizard of Oz—my all-time favorite movie! I originally created the art for this piece for a graphic design student show poster (for a class... mine did not get selected to be used for the actual show). I decided to modify the art and use it for this one of many great quotes from the movie. I'll probably do more of these in the future... SO many great lines! And it will be fun to create more illustrations to go with the lettering.

By the way, today's HLP is #121, which means I am virtually finished with one third of the year, which is my goal for the project. One a day for a year. I'm still digging the process and learning a lot!

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #120

I can't remember how I discovered the amazing Lex Land, singer/songwriter/guitarist. I do remember when I heard a song by her and then ordered her CD, "Orange Days on Lemon Street," which came out in 2009. I can listen to that CD over and over again. I had no idea that she was on "The Voice" in 2012! And, she had songs on TV shows such as "Private Practice" and "One Tree Hill." I had no idea, but she deserves to have her songs heard, most definitely!

I don't know why, but I decided to just do a quick lettering exercise using her name, and this is the result. Simple, yet I kind of like it. It doesn't do her justice, however, in my opinion. Maybe some other time I'll do one with textures and intricacies with one of her lyrics or song titles. That would be more fitting.

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #118

This is a lyric line from one of my favorite female singer/songwriters, Leah Siegel. I discovered her, probably around ten years ago, on MySpace. I have all of her recordings (at least all that I have been able to find). I find her older stuff to be what I love the most. This is from the song, "How Do You Take It," from her Leah Siegel Presents record. The photo is from morguefile.com.

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #117

I've loved the band Radiohead for a long time. One of their very early songs, "Creep," was never one I much cared for. Well, not until recently. I did hear a version of it by Haley Reinhart recently and kind of liked it. After a few listenings, I really liked it. So, I went back and listened to Radiohead's original version, and now I'm totally into it.

Here is Radiohead's original version.
Here is Haley Reinhart's version.

This is a beautiful line from the song.

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #116

I heard the phrase, "Brush haste aside," and knew I had to use it for one of my HGT phrases. Then I saw this photograph on morguefile.com, and it was the perfect match. I'm really happy with how this came out. One day I will make a post of just my favorites—the ones I think were successful designs.

Let me know what you think! Thanks!

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #115

A quote from Jack Kerouac. This was not from one of his books, but rather, an essay he wrote in the 1950s that wasn't published in a magazine until much later. I haven't seen the essay, but I know he wrote a lot that people say has to do with Buddhist thought. I immediately thought of the Buddhist concept of emptiness when I read the quote.

The photo I found, to me, is the perfect complement. The cat is so zen! Another morguefile.com photo. What a great resource.

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #114

I saw this photo on Morguefile.com, and started thinking of a way to describe the image using the prefix, "disc." Discount? Discover? Disassemble? Ah... Discontinued. It seemed to fit.

Then I thought about using CD shapes to form the letters in the word.

So this is the result.

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #113

I have thought many times about writing a children's book. Actually, I did write one in grad school (when I got a master's in education), and I illustrated it as well. I still have it. Anyway, I think I could write and illustrate a really good children's book, but right now my focus is elsewhere. One day I will. :)

Anyway, all of this is to say that today's phrase is all of my own concept and creation. I created the art because I think hedgehogs are awesomely cute, and after having done that, I thought of a phrase that makes use of alliteration. So it all came together pretty quickly. Hope you enjoy!

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #112

Happy Birthday, Heather!

I took this photo of Heather last summer (during a photo shoot for my digital photography class). I love how this portrait turned out. The actual photo is in color, but for this piece I wanted to do something a little different for purposes of readability and contrast.

I found the words by looking up the name Heather and also the heather plant, and I extracted all of the words that came under the headings of the meaning of each one. The amazing thing is that all of it is true about my friend. She is beautiful in every way. I am so lucky to have found a friend like her in this life, and I know we'll be friends forever.

I love you, Heather! I hope you have a great birthday!!!

xoxoxoxo,
Gloria

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #111

I am really practicing making "curly" letters. It's challenging! I don't know how "successful" this design is, but I had fun doing it. I really like the photo of the old key, which I live traced in Illustrator. I found the photo on morguefile.com, a great resource for high resolution, free, license free photos!

I do believe that everyone has creative potential. Sometimes it takes a lot to unlock it. It takes work. It takes play. It takes thinking outside the box. I will say that doing this daily project has been wonderful for me in terms of helping to unlock some creativity. The more of them I create, the more I think of. Sometimes I get in a rut, but I still commit to doing one piece every day. Actually, I'm a couple days ahead at the moment. How did that happen?

Anyway, technically it is September 4th (it's 12:32 a.m.), so I'll go ahead and post this. Let me know your thoughts via comments if you wish to leave one. That goes for any of my posts! Thanks!

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #110

I love to browse through photography websites. Unsplash.com is a great resource for designers because the photos are free, license free, and high resolution. Plus, you will find some really unique shots. Another great site for this is morguefile.com. I had thought of the phrase, "Don't fret," as in "Don't worry," but I wanted to find a great shot of frets on a guitar. Sure enough, morguefile.com had the perfect photo! I had a lot of fun working with perspective on these letters. It took awhile, but I think it was worth it.

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #109

I've been listening to Neko Case a LOT lately. I find her music to be beautifully creative and haunting. I'm really moved by her voice, melodies, chord changes, and lyrics. She's brilliant.

Here is another lyric line of hers.

(By the way, another great resource for designers looking for great free/license free high resolution photos is morguefile.com, which is where this photo came from, taken by Jay Powell.)

GLORIA ROUBAL'S DAILY HAND GENERATED TYPE PHRASE #108

The Cheshire Cat. One of the most memorable book characters from my childhood! I actually have a mug that has the cat on it, and when you pour a hot beverage into it, everything except the smile disappears! I LOVE it! I hope it never wears out or breaks.

Anyway, I have no idea why I thought of Alice in Wonderland and decided to use a quote from it for today's phrase, but I had a lot of fun doing it. (All of this is original work by moi. Obviously not an original concept.)
